Things to do around Monte Vista

Rio Grande Scenic Railroad – Ride from Alamosa to the mountains. This Railroad has been in San Luis Valley since 1876. The train stops for a few hours at La Vita, Colorado.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad – Built in 1880 for mining. Ride America’s longest, highest narrow gauge steam train.

Splashland Hot Springs – Splashland hot springs is located near Alamosa. Enjoy pools & slides at this water park with the family.

Creede Repertory Theatre – Since 1866, the repertory theatre is located in Creede.

Great Sand Dunes National Park – Sand Dunes, camping, hiking and 4×4 trails. Great photography opportunity.

Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge – The refuge is the spring home to migrating Sandhill Cranes. During fall, elk visit.
Wolf Creek Pass Ski Area – The ski area is above 11,000 ft. & has 1,600 acres of skiing or snowboarding.

Zapata Falls – Zapata falls, a 30 foot waterfall, South of the Great Sand Dunes Nat. Park. Hiking is required to see the falls.

Rio Grande River – The Rio Grande flows from the Colorado Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. The most rafted section is the Rio Grande Gorge, runs 68 miles from southern Colorado to New Mexico.

Sangre de Cristo Mountains – 10 peaks over 14,000′, more than 20 over 13,000′. Hiking, 4×4, rock climbing, skiing, whitewater rafting, fly fishing.

San Juan Mountains – 13 peaks over 14,000 feet. Lakes, streams, hiking, skiing, camping, kayaking. Mining towns, ghost towns. 4x4ing on trails.
